The Body Keeps The Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma. Bessel A. van der Kolk (This book showed me trauma lives in the body and explained my PTSD reactions from my childhood. After reading this book I agreed to the therapy.) * Great Rolling Stone article that reviews van der Kolk’s book and history.
The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness, and Healing in a Toxic Culture – Gabor Mate (This book explained why I have always felt an internal loneliness and how it connected to my parents’ inability to bond with me.)
It Didn’t Start with You: How Inherited Family Trauma Shapes Who We Are and How to End the Cycle Mark Wolynn (I have come to understand generational trauma as I have reflected on how my family acted.)
When the Body Says No – Gabor Mate (I find this book interesting as it explains the mind-body connection between emotions and disease.)
Supernormal: The Secret World of the Family Hero – Meg Jay (This book showed me how other abused children developed similar coping mechanisms that I had. I saw my overachievement and desperation for a better life in this book.)
The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog: And Other Stories from a Child Psychiatrist’s Notebook – What Traumatized Children Can Teach Us About Loss, Love, and Healing. Bruce D. Perry (I found this book fascinating. It was the first time I heard “Genetic imprint from traumatic experiences carries through at least two generations.”)
How to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us about Consciousness, Dying, Addition, Depression, and Transcendence – Michael Pollan (Fantastic overview of psychedelics in general while also explaining the challenges researchers have faced around testing psychedelics for mental health issues.)
Ecstasy as Medicine: How MDMA therapy Can Help You Overcome Trauma, Anxiety, and Depression…and Feel More Love – I haven’t read this book yet but the description seems to have all green flags for me.
